Texas Woman Flashes Funny License Plate on BMW Post Divorce

A recent article in the Huffington Post begins with the line: “Don’t mess with Texas-and definitely don’t miss [sic] with Texas ex-wives.” The article refers to a Texas woman who recently divorced her husband and posted on her Reddit account a photo of a BMW with a license plate reading WASHIS.

The article notes that this is not the first time an ex-spouse acted vengefully, yet creatively, in obtaining a personalized license plate for a flashy vehicle coming out of a divorce. Apparently, a photo was sent in last month of a Corvette purchased by a New Hampshire resident after his wife divorced him. In that case, the man’s license plate read SHE LEFT.

While these are somewhat flippant examples of post-divorce revelry, property division, and financial planning are an important part of the divorce process. This is particularly the case when there are a lot of assets in the picture, and when assets are in dispute. Really, it isn’t only the wealthy that run into problems in this area. Anytime there are assets of significance-financially or sentimentally-the scene is set for potential disagreement.

Divorce attorneys, of course, have the task of ensuring that their client gets what is not only their legal due but also their personal due. In the latter category, there is often negotiation that has to take place. Parties, go figure, don’t always agree on what constitutes an equitable distribution.

Equitable distribution is the standard family law judges have to work with when deciding matters of property distribution in Texas. In coming posts, we’ll be talking more about what goes into these decisions and what parties can do to increase their chances of achieving a favorable outcome.
